Colon (:)
1. Use colon to make a list of a series of things. Do not also write the
next word after a colon with any capital letter.
Example: I need a helping hand in the following areas: collecting
data, editing data, and encoding data.
Example: I need happiness, wealth, and above all love.
NOTE: Do not use a colon before a list directly
following a verb.
2. Use a colon when the second sentence is further explanation,
illustration, clarification of the first sentence or even a quotation.
Example: He worked so hard for a while: he worked from six in the
morning to eleven in the evening.
Example: my dad taught me a good lesson: always stay strong.
Example: He always rightly told me: “Work hard. Play hard.”
3. Use a colon to start a formal or business letter with the salutation.
Example: Dear Peter Cooper:
