Hyphens (-)
1. Use a hyphen to introduce a compound adjective, a
compound verb or any compound phrase made by the writer.
Example: leading-edge technology
Example: This is the best way to self-study a course
Example: This is the best stress-handling strategy
2. Use a hyphen for numbers, but with no space.
Example: 8:30-4:00 p.m. / 2017-2020
3. Use a hyphen for suffixes and prefixes, in particular self-, ex-.
Example: semi-formal / ultra-violet ray / self-respect / co-worker
